None of this presents the oil industry in the best light. A recent SMU study revealed a connection between rising pressures in saltwater disposal (SWD) injection formations and leaks/releases in abandoned wells. However, a shut-in or temporarily abandoned well will only degrade with time due to the downhole fluid exposure.
